As we age, our roles change. Decision-making and care for our parents evolves. Having important family conversations about the care and needs of our parents can be challenging for family members. A Mediator can support families as they navigate transition and change by providing structure and effective solutions that is Elder-centric.
As a family, you will have the opportunity to address and come to resolution on topics such as:
Communication Issues
Medical and Healthcare Decision-making
Financial Decisions
Living Arrangements
General Decision-making
Family Relationships
Lifestyle choices
Needs of Other Family Members and Caregivers
Guardianship / Conservatorship
Estate, Trust and Probate Matters
Whether court ordered, initiated by a family member(s), or pre-planning while our Elder is still cognitively able to voice needs and goals, Elder Mediation processes allow for families to plan for and address inevitable conflict through an inclusive process.
The initial call to the mediator is complementary. The mediator will talk with key family members, including any attorney's involved, and the elder to make sure that mediation is appropriate for both the elder and the family's needs. The mediator will then create an agenda and schedule the meeting. Using a model adapted from indigenous cultures, Family Group Conferencing is a process that the mediator takes the participants through to understand issues, needs and concerns, seek and test options for resolution, and create family agreements.
